10 ways to get students to focus on learning first instead of grade.

Dear students, It is to learning, not to the grade, that priority must be given!

We've all seen a student miss out on a learning opportunity while struggling to get an extra mark or two on an assignment. For most teachers, such a memory makes us wince, we are even a little sad that the child misses the "real" learning of the moment.  But for many children, it has become a matter of grades, to the detriment of "real" learning.

Here's how to get students to focus on learning rather than just these few things:

#1. Let them choose!

Autonomy is another way to motivate students. It is not about letting chaos reign where everyone does what they want when they want. But you can give them the choice:

what they study
projects they do
what they read
how they do their job.

#2. Teach the difference between learning and performance.

Children need to know the difference and know what really matters.
A learning objective could be: " We will be readers able to make predictions about the text. »
While a performance goal would be: "I'm going to get a good grade while reading. »

#3. Use video to generate interest.

One of the best ways to hold their attention to make them learn for themselves how something works (outside the traditional textbook) is YouTube.
You can find videos that implicitly teach the why and how of a concept, while still being entertaining.

#4. Change reviews:

What if notes were more... repairable, and less permanent!
You can facilitate this by making homework redoable.

#5. Neither too big nor too small – the Goldilocks principle:

You have to reference the Goldilocks task to design the perfect homework—something that isn't too hard or too easy, but just right. This invites children to immerse themselves in finding solutions and answers rather than focusing on the grade.

6. The praise of “failure”

" Fail " is the idea that failure is not an end point. On the contrary, it is the ideal starting point to grow. Here are some ways to help students accept "failure":

Celebrate each other's accomplishments when it comes to self-improvement.
Look at failure as a way to find a new and better solution.
Avoid praising first-time success.

#7. Try a new learning style:

How do children actually assimilate new information? You can help them find out by:

#8. Say out loud: "I'm not sure!" »

Did your students see that you didn't know something and did they work to find the answer? Modeling this process can be invaluable in teaching how to learn. Rather than waiting for them to know how to do it, you can invite them to find out by simply saying: " Let's find out together ".

#9. Motivate yourself to learn yourself:

Let the children see what an enthusiastic learner looks like! Whether you're perfecting a recipe for chicken wings, reading all about building a tiny house to save the environment, or learning how teenage minds work, talk to them!

#10. Create a space for them to share when they are no longer interested.

Not everything is always fun to learn, and that's okay. Respond positively when a child says they no longer like something and help them change course.
